Air New Zealand has announced that it will begin testing the IATA Travel Pass digital health passport solution on its Auckland-Sydney route in April.
Jennifer Sepull, Chief Digital Officer of Air New Zealand, says the goal is to enable customers to seamlessly manage their digital travel documents throughout their travel experience.
“Once the borders reopen, travel will be very different, with clients’ health data needing to be verified upon check-in. It’s basically like having a digital health certificate that can be easily and securely shared with airlines. This will give customers the peace of mind that they are meeting all travel requirements for different countries around the world even before arriving at the airport.
“Reassuring customers about travel safety is one of our priorities. By using the app, customers can be confident that everyone on board meets the same government health requirements as they do.
“By having a place to digitally store all of your health information in one place, it will not only speed up the registration process, but also open up the potential for contactless travel,” Sepull explained.
With the digital health passport solution, customers will be able to create a digital health wallet linked to their electronic passport. Once travelers have been tested and / or vaccinated, the labs will securely send the data to the individual’s app. It then checks the travel requirements against the data, and customers who meet those travel requirements will be given the green tick to travel.
As FTE previously reported, the IATA Travel Pass uses decentralized blockchain technology, ensuring that there is no central database that could be hacked to access personal information.
Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President of Airport, Passengers, Cargo and Security, Says Air New Zealand’s Trial of IATA Travel Pass is Important Step Towards Restarting Travel international.
“Air New Zealand is demonstrating its leadership in the industry by being one of the first airlines in the world to offer its passengers a digital travel pass.
“Air New Zealand’s trial of the IATA Travel Pass will help give governments the confidence to reopen borders and passengers the confidence to travel. The app has been developed with the highest levels of privacy and data security, so passengers always remain in control of their COVID-19 health information. And governments can be confident that passengers who are “OK to travel” are in full compliance with COVID-19 travel requirements. “
The trial will run for three weeks once the app hits app store / Android shelves in April and flight attendants and customers are invited to join the trial. The airline is in discussions with government agencies over options for testing validation and vaccination.
