Hays Travel founder and chief executive John Hays has died after collapsing at the company’s headquarters.
The company said in a statement that Hays died on Friday, November 13 while doing the job he loved.
Hays co-founded Hays Travel with his wife Irene in 1980, which made about $1,500 in first-year sales, and hit nearly $2 billion in sales in 2018 with 160 stores and 1,400 employees.
famous hays acquired the entire retail portfolio of Thomas Cook last year after the business was placed into compulsory administration, saving more than 2,500 jobs and 500 retail branches across the UK.
“John has grown Hays Travel into the UK’s largest independent travel agent, providing jobs and careers for thousands of young people over the age of 40,” the company said in a statement.
“Throughout this difficult year, he has done everything in his power to save jobs and protect the travel industry.
“He was held in immense respect by his staff, colleagues, family and friends and was recognized throughout his life for his many achievements.
“He was also proud of his loyal staff who, under the guidance of the Board and management team, will ensure the business continues to serve the customers of the UK’s largest independent travel agent. as he would have wished.”
