RCMP are investigating after dozens of Fort McMurray residents said they booked flights through International Travel Services – but then found their trips had been canceled or never purchased.
Wood Buffalo RCMP confirmed Monday that they are now investigating the company, after several complaints were filed, and more people came forward.

“I can confirm that we have received several complaints regarding international travel services in Fort McMurray. We are currently reviewing them, ”said the Alberta RCMP Corporal. said Ronald Bumbry.
“We encourage anyone who believes they have been the victim of thefts booked and paid for but without services rendered, to contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP. “
On LinkedIn and the Better Business Bureau, a man named Ujeer Ahmed is listed as the owner of International Travel Services. A lot of people have said that is who they are dealing with.
There are currently no charges, but he could face charges of mischief or fraud, the RCMP said.
Air passenger rights Founder Gabor Lukacs said those affected must take action.
“We’re not talking about a real mistake or a mistake here,” Lukacs said. “What I understand has happened is the [agency] pocketed the money and delivered nothing – or [the agency] booked the flight and then canceled it immediately.
So they created the illusion for the passengers that they were getting a ticket, but in reality, they were not getting anything, ”Lukacs said.
He added that the passengers involved should contact lawyers, possibly in groups, and continue to report to police as soon as possible.
“There isn’t really any protection against fraud unless society as a whole takes action,” Lukacs said. “This is why it is so harmful, it erodes confidence in the whole industry and it would be a huge damage to the economy.”
The window of the International Travel Services Peter Pond mall was closed on Monday, the mall confirmed to Global News in an email:
“International Travel has a lease in place which requires the tenant to open its doors. However, the tenant did not open for business today and we were unable to contact the owner of this business.
Customers whose trip has been canceled are lost. Natasha Flett has booked a vacation in Cancun. She has used the business before and has had no problems until now.
“Eight thousand for [me], and six thousand for my friend. Together we have passed $ 14,000, ”said customer Natasha Flett.
“I wasn’t supposed to get on a plane until February 19,” he said. [Ahmed] hasn’t technically rendered my services yet, so I have to wait until February 19 to prove that he won’t render my services. Then [my credit card company] will create a dispute.
“Fort McMurray is a really generous community and we’re working all our asses out, so for this bunch of people to fool that amount of money, it’s crazy, it’s sad,” Flett said.
